The Seattle Mariners are having a tough season; lets break it down.
By Katherine Draves The Mariners have a 20-27 record this season. They're in last place in their division. They just had the worst four-stretch in franchise history. What's happening? Injuries, plain and simple. Four of the five pitchers are injured. In baseball, a pitcher typically plays one game a week because pitching is so hard on the shoulders. It is essential that all five pitchers are top notch so they can be rotated easily. Star pitcher Felix Hernandez is out with a dead arm. In late April, he was moved to the disabled list with inflammation in his throwing shoulder. Tokyo-born Hisashi Iwakuma also has shoulder inflammation. Fellow pitcher James Paxton is also on the DL with a strained forearm. Paxton is expected to return soon though. Left-hander Drew Smyly injured his elbow; he's supposed to return May 29th but reports indicate in may be later than that. Besides the pitchers, Shawn O'Malley and Mitch Haniger are also suffering injuries. Shortstop Shawn O'Malley had an emergency procedure to remove his appendix on March 21st but developed a shoulder injury during rehab. He will be out for all of May and maybe some of June. Outfielder Mitch Haniger is struggling to recover from a strained oblique. In an attempt to compensate, he injured his right side and recovery is going slowly. Their upcoming opponents will be difficult so if you want to see us win, wait till summer to attend a game.
